Wow! There you are, Ark. Boy, am I glad to see this! I saw the other forum was locked and didn't think to look in the basket for the new August thread. I even went so far as to start a new topic to try to get around the locked one.

MORNING FOOPS..........

Drizzly day out there, temps are warm and so we will take the moisture. Everything is so dry but havent had to water plants for a few days. Spending my days at the Ex, watch horse things all day and then back after supper for entertainment. Last night it was a band called Night Fever, an evening with the "BeeGees". They were terrific, if you closed your eyes you would think that they were the real thing. Tonight there is Abbamania and I hear that they are just as wonderful. Pays to be old to be able to enjoy the music. Laughing

Bon Jovi Tribute is tomorrow night but wont be able to do that one, have anothe OES funeral service. This is Achievement weekend for the girls 4-H and it is being held at another place so will have to juggle places. Ex is finished Sat night. Good thing too because I have a load of wash to get through.

ARK, glad that they are on the right track with your treatment. I keep checking in when I am home to see if there is any news. Have a good day. Have they put a name to this diagnosis?

Everyone else have a wonderful one too.

Donna

Hi Ark - so happy to see you posting again! wow, you certainly gave everyone (and yourself) a scare.
Sounds like you were lucky there was someone in the hospital got that diagnosis right quickly enough.
Now, you just take it easy, concentrate on getting well again... and I'm sure there will be more pies coming your way soon! Smile

Hi all...
I had my best day in quite a while. The second plasma exchange went better since they kindly knocked me out for it. I have "TTP"syndrom.....kicked off by food poisoning and morphing into a bloodcell killing raging infection.

RICK
They would probably love donations of blood or plasma! Each exchange takes ten donations of plasma.

Annie has decided to stay with us for a couple more months to help me out. Sweety pie....

ARK: So happy to hear you are starting to get better. Gosh, what a nightmare that has been for you. Do you know what made you get so sick?

I wonder if everyone is finding the August forum yet? I had to hunt around for it myself. We miss you ARK....You always take good care of us on the forum.

I would donate some blood for you but they don't like to take my blood...I pass out realy quickly...such a BIG wimp am I.

I had the day from hell at the PO. On top of the things that went wrong (which I will spare you guys the torture of hearing) my cash box flew open and all my stamps, change and money flew everywhere, right as I was trying to close the PO. EGADS...when something goes wrong, everything seems to follow suit. WHAT A DAY...

Off to the Potts Grove Fire Dept fair tonight for supper. We had supper there last night too...so much better than cooking and it's always good to support the local fire companies.

Have a great weekend everyone..

Love & prayers to all...

ARK!! Big hugs to you! I am so happy you're on the up-swing Very Happy

I had to look up what you have - Great Scott, that is some very very scary stuff No No

FreeForum must've done some house cleaning or upgrading because it logged me out last week. I've been reading but stayed logged out becausssssss-------------------------

I couldn't remember my password Rolling Eyes dumb dumb dumb. Brand new member and couldn't remember my password, so I had to hunt it down. That took some time because I keep a lot of things in proverbial "safe places" --- I don't think I need to embarass myself with where that was going monkey

I do have have good news about Joker, the horse that got messed up by the new farrier. Just so folks know I wasn't blowing things out of proportion:

I dropped an update with a picture of Joker's terribly enlarged fetlock joint at the vet's on Friday (yesterday)--------------when I picked up the Banamine for my 25 yr old that has EMS and isn't handling the heat/humidity too well rake

At seven this morning (Saturday) I get a call from the vet's mobile assistant telling me they're on their way to my house.

I told Kenny, the vet must think this is bad as, my comment was I felt he needed to see Joker when he could fit Joker in----------------

One ultrasound, 4 or 5 (I forget) x-rays, a BIG HONKIN' leg & hoof wrap, and an injection into the vein of something, later, Joker's diagnosis?

Torn ligament with severe edema surrounding the sesamoid joint, as a result of being trimmed too short - AGAIN by a different trimmer.

The vet said thankfully there are no fractures and no signs of arthritis which was his serious concern. Even though the lump was bone hard it was still all fluid. What a relief it was to hear all of this.

So it cost me another $208 to hopefully fix yet another person's crippling mistake to my horse. To reiterate, the trim was correct, just like with the previous trimmer.

But, just like with the previous trimmer, the trim was way too agressive for Joker.

So Joker has a leg/hoof wrap on big enough to be another leg, is in lockdown in the side yard with Duke for several days. The vet made a "lift" under Joker's heel that is covered with duct tape.

I compensated the other leg with a 1/2" partial pad in the boot. Between the hoofwear, face mask and muzzle, it's hard to tell you're looking at a horse from the front view

I put Duke in with Joker because Duke needs to stay close to water as he doesn't seem to have enough sense to come down off the ridge, even if he's dehydrated.

16.1H Snotface Rusty has 13.3H Streeter for a pasture mate and I feel sorry for Rusty because Streeter won't take an ounce of crap from him.

And being the horse braggert that I am, The vet and his assistant both made it a point to thank me for having such great and quiet horses to work on. Joker didn't even have a halter on, they just set up the X-ray and ultrasound, shoved stuff under Joker as needed and went to work. Joker never budged. They said they could do double the work in a day if everyone was like Joker.

Those kinds of comments from professional folks is what makes me keep working/handling my horses My Way, the way my Grandpap taught me.

So, once again, Joker's on the mend from human hands. I don't know what it's going to take to get farriers and trimmers to realize they just cannot apply that "cookbook recipe" to every single horse. Especially when they're dealing with founder and the horse is already in pain pale

And even if they do understand there's a variance from time-to-time, they need to get it thru their thick/pigheaded skulls that there's going to be an even further variance to the variance.

They need to listen when an experienced horse owner is talking instead of just giving the Owner that condescending Bobbing-Dog-Head that, only the thought of going to jail prevents me from ripping their heads of their shoulders.

The vet said he had a couple other people he could call and I asked him not to -- at least not now. I told him Joker's better off in my hands simply because I don't want a jail sentence if he gets messed up again. I don't think his tendons can take much more in this regard

As the vet was handing me the bill, he said it was $1,208. I must've gone white as a ghost because he told Kenny I "about went down" - lollol.

I was silently wondering how I was going to tell him I didn't have that much money today. Seeing the $208 bill made it a relief to pay after hearing $1,208. That's one way to make the client happy to write the check - add $1,000 then say "just kidding" bom

They were gone by 9:00 AM. I trimmed Duke, then put them in the side yard with Rusty and Streeter in the three acres on the other side of the paddock; everyone can see each other. I can't leave Rusty in with Joker because he's a bully and will make sure Joker gets hurt again. It does my heart good to see my little 13.3H Arab knock his 16.1H self around ROFL ROFL

HOORAY, ARK!!!!1  What a relief to have you back! Very Happy Very Happy And how way above and beyond the call of duty that you're still managing to squeeze in functioning as our computer shepherd. ClappingHands ClappingHands Thank you!

Slow on the uptake as I am, I took a while to catch up with you all here. I kept going to the July site and wondering where everybody was...At last, a light bulb: AUGUST! Which I stumbled on by coming "Home."

No,no, I've not et the pie! It is still waiting for you when you say the word.
Do you suppose I could ship it frozen????? (Well, I suppose the answer is Yes, but that it would not ARRIVE frozen....) If anybody has any suggestions about that possibility, let me know. I REALLY think a homemade Maine bluebrry pie would have you up and running again,ARK, in no time. Mine, especially, if
I do say so. bouncy bouncy

I am still picking blueberries -- though slowly, because these are very small and very low-bush little buggers. Picture old me, baboon-like, on knees and knuckles. Each session yields only about a quart. One season I put enough in the freezer for 11 pies. Won't manage that his season because, while the blueberries are holding up, my back isn't. But I love the process: being way out in the back of beyond with no sounds but those of the berries plunking in the bucket...

Got to break off here to attend my neighbor's annual pig roast.. I will eat extra with you in mind, ARK!

BEECH
I am really happy to see you posting!! Just send happy blueberry smelling healing thoughts ! Yum.......

Everyone else
Thanks for all those thoughts and prayers! The doctors seem pleased with my progress. Another plasma exchange tomorrow and if my readings continue to improve, they may let me go by Tues.

The way to make me a happy Foopette is give me posts to read!! I have loved seeing you all and I have mostly keeping up here since emailing is difficult on the Kindle.

CB
This was set off by food poisoning. Different people get it different ways. I am lucky it was caught so fast and live near a place that can treat it...

Ark, I was really glad to see you post today. When I didn't see you last night, I got a little concerned.
That is really great news that you might get to go home so soon!

How do I get to the administrator's section? So far, I haven't found the right place. If I can get there I'll be happy to help out however I can.

This evening was, uh, shall we say entertaining? I had to work all day today. The last hour I was there we got hit with some rather severe thunderstorms, but by the time I was ready to RIDE home the rain had stopped, although the threat was still there. I hit the road on Hot Flash, breaking most of the speed limits hoping to make it home before it rained again. Didn't make it. I was just under half way when it hit for real. I rode in the rain and storm for about 3 miles and stopped at a church where there was a portico I could stand under and wait. I waited until the worst of the storm had passed and decided it wasn't going to get any earlier in the evening, nor any lighter, and I wasn't going to get any wetter, so I mounted up and made the slow careful trek home. Home safe, but decidedly soggy. Now why didn't I remember to put my rain suit in the trunk?

PostSubject: Good morning gentlefolks   August 2012 EmptySun Aug 05, 2012 10:53 am

Hello. I am not Diane, I am Donnie. I thought I would drop in to give you the lowdown on Diane, who is doing fine, BTW, and is finally coming back out of the shadows. This was a close one and I very nearly lost her. Here is what happened....

It all started on July 21st at the ACTHA trail competition in Newport, VA. This was a first-time event for the organizers and it did not go well, with several injured riders and major organizational problems. I won't comment on any of that, but I will comment on the lunch served by a group of 4H girls, who served taco salad. That taco salad is the likely source for the food poisoning that began this ordeal.

Diane had the taco salad, which was handled by a half-dozen or so 4H girls in the warm summer heat and twelve hours later she was feeling a little queasy. Another twelve hours later she was indeed sick and took some Imodium AD in the hopes of getting some help with the abdominal cramps. The next day was no better with all the symptoms of food poisoning and some traces of blood were beginning to appear in the diarrhea. The next day there was a lot of it and it was fresh and red and she agreed to see her doctor. I called her doctor, who said that she should probably go to Urgent Care instead. I called them and they agreed to see her, so off we go with Diane laying in the backseat of the car. She is seen pretty promptly and in fifteen minutes or so we were told to take her to the emergency room at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center--and that they were waiting for her. NOW.

We took her to the ER and they took her in immediately and her sister, Annie, and I did the waiting room game for a couple of hours while she was tended to. They kept her, of course, as she had a serious case of food poisoning, with the likely candidates being E-coli or Salmonella, with at least thirty other possibilities. Bottom line, she spent six days on massive antibiotics, including some strong ones that are used in places like Bangladesh and Pakistan to treat bacterial, amoebic, and protozoan GI infections. Diane's initial food poisoning developed into a very serious GI infection that was very scary, but the bleeding finally slowed and stopped after six days of medication, but something else was obviously very wrong.

Her blood work was really ominous. Her platelet count crashed, she became anemic, and her blood markers that indicate destruction of red blood cells was off the charts. More bottom line: She had developed an autoimmune blood clotting disorder called TPP-HUS (Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome), a very rare disorder that occurs in fewer than 10 people in 1,000,000 per year in the general population. Without treatment, the mortality rate is nearly 100%.

Thankfully, there is a now treatment that is called plasmapherisis, or plasma exchange therapy. If the condition is discovered early and treatment started promptly, the survival rate is 75-80%. Diane's case was discovered early, just by shear dumb luck. One of her doctors happened to be a pathologist of blood diseases and he had seen it before, plus we happened to live near one of only two facilities in the state of Virginia who can treat the condition. Had we taken her anywhere else and had a couple of days of additional delay before she could be treated she almost certainly would not have survived.

Her body was making antibodies to attack itself and billions of micro blood clots formed throughout every organ in her body. That's why her platelet count crashed--from initiating the clotting process everywhere, and that's why she became anemic--from making billions of blood clots everywhere. There were pieces of red blood cells and microclots floating throughout her blood, which is every bit as serious as it sounds. There are many ways that a TTP patient can die, but stroke, heart attack, and bleeding in the brain being very common.

Diane was moved to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, who has the facility to perform plasmaphersis and she had her 4th treatment yesterday. This means that she has received 80 units of plasma to replace her own heavily contaminated plasma, which was the color of beer and carrying the harmful antibodies and the load of toxins released from the dead bacteria killed by the antibiotics. With each exhange of plasma the color gets a little lighter and hopefully soon it will be the clear of healthy plasma. She is past the point where the majority of the TTP patients die during treatment, but far from being out of the woods. The procedure is relatively safe, compared to dying with TTP. There are serious risks involved and we sweat every one of these procedures.

She is mostly feeling better every day, although that may be the blood of other people talking. The proof will be how she feels when her own blood is doing its thing unassisted from the outside and not trying to self-destruct. Long term is unknown. She will always have TTP, but she will hopefully be in remission the rest of her life. Most people take several years to recover their strength and endurance, but Diane is strong and has responded extraordinarily well, but extraordinary is a word that I have used before in describing Diane.

Life has now changed for us, but in what ways we have no way of knowing yet. TTP has a huge footprint on everybody it touches and we will do what we need to do to carry on. I just wish she had used her luck and bought a lottery ticket instead of using using it to get a rare blood disease!

I will try to keep you gentlefolk informed as I have time. Life is very 'interesting' at the moment and I am trying to manage as best as I can.

One more comment: We am profoundly grateful to all the people who have given blood, especially the blood plasma. As I write this, Diane has the blood plasma from 80 people running in her body and the whole blood of about 6 or 8 others. Blood donations really are the gift of life and to those gentle altruistic souls out there in the world who give that precious gift, I give you my humble thanks.

Donnie

Thank you, Donnie. Your acount has me fighting back tears. Please accept huge hugs. Though I'm more of a lurker than a poster here, I've long been an admirer of Diane, and now I can see why she's an admirer of you. Next week, when I see my doctor, I'm going to ask her if it will be OK for me to give blood, and, meantime, I'll continue to hold you both high in my thoughts... and to work on how to get that pie there... Laughing Love to you both. hug

Freeze it, ship in dry ice and "next day" with whatever service will ship food and ask that company for proper packing instructions Very Happy

ELLEN - I can relate to that riding in the rain! I got caught twice recently, once on Golden Girl (the big Reflex), and once on the Ruckus -- though in neither instance was I far from home. GG has a windshield, and the helmet I use on her has a visor, but both just clouded up and were more impediment than help, so I just had to procede then pretty carefully. But on the Ruckus, which I was wickedly riding in shorts and sandals, I just decided to laugh and enjoy getting thoroughly soaked and, in the process, cooled off -- and I did! Of course, the story would have been different had I had far to go. As it was, I found myself holding a hand up to my face to keep the rain from striking like needles. But what can beat novelty and a momentary sense of being carefree in old age?? Ha ! ROFL ROFL I'm piling up memories to drag out like rosary beads in the nursing home ... Wink (Have I said that before?? What's 'memory??' affraid)

My motorcycle fix-it guy, who looks like a neckless tatooed Sumo wrestler but seems quite sweet, set out from here on August 1 with three other bikers, all on their big Harleys and headed for a big bike meet in South Dakota. I told him to wave on the way by ...

Still oppressively muggy here. But not parched or burning or flooding, so we remain among the lucky -- so far.
