Hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's celebration! We mostly slept thru it, but then we are such party animals.

Anyone catch the Rose Bowl parade? Did you see the 91 year old endurance rider? I want to be like her when I grow up!
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Happy 2016....Winter has arrived here in PA. It's going down to 7 on Tuesday. BBRRRRRRR I broke out my ski bibs to walk Ace out in the fields. Next step, my snow boots will be making their appearance.

I'm happy to report that Ace is feeling better, back to his nutty self. No more tummy troubles. Pretty sure it was something he ate out in the fields. I'm still feeding rice and boiled ground meat and starting to mix his dry dog food in with it. He has to take the Zantac for another week.

ELLEN: You didn't scare me about the Kong, he HATES the Kong, never bothers with it. He is strange for a Lab and never chews anything, he still has toys from when he was a puppy. He likes the soft fluffy toys and has quite a collection from family & friends.

Taking down the tree today. Crying or Very sad

Praying for a good year for everyone.

38 here this morning...........50 by 9:30, then on to 68-70 by 3P. Great day for bowl games here and parade at 11. We're not going downtown, might see some of it on TV and maybe some football. Boy, that Elliot linebacker for Ohio sure can run...........he's guaranteed a pro team contract, obviously. Hubs is a Buckeye fan, today WVU............we'll see. Tonight we have dueling pianos dinner with our friends.......all more precious as each year shows up.

Big rains starting next Mon for about 5 days according to reports. Ready as we can be here........El Nino off the coast of California.

Has anyone heard or read anything from Rose? Susan?

SUNNY, great you checked in................hope you can move this year.

ARK, like you, I have no resolutions. I'm inch by inch cleaning out and
getting ready for a small garage sale sometime this spring.....I'll just put my stuff on our flat trailer, tow it out front, put signs up, and sell what I have.
That's in a couple of mos.

Wishing a great 2016 for everyone. God bless.

Susan says that Mike is still in the hospital, but slowly improving.

I watched the Ohio State/Notre Dame game with my Ohio cousins. Needless to say, they were very happy with the results. My next door neighbor is Catholic, so he's a Notre Dame fan. There were a few funny, but slightly hostile, messages sent between my cousin and my neighbor. Friendly rivalry sort of thing.

It's cold this morning, but mostly sunny - which is good since we haven't had much sun for several days.

Winter has arrived. I guess we couldn't avoid it forever. We got our heated water buckets hooked up today in the barn. I love those things! The days of carrying hot water down the hill are just unpleasant memories.... Very Happy

CB
The older rider in the parade is 91! She just gave up competing in endurance rides in recent years, but still rides some. She has over 30,000 competition miles and completed the Tevis ride 22 times. An incredible rider.

ELLEN
My naked tree is still standing in the living room.... Rolling Eyes We are such slugs....We did unplug the outdoor lights. Everything gets put up tomorrow. I hope.

GRAYMARE
More rain coming? The desert is sure to bloom this year. Our temps are back to winter normal, but not before a few forsythia blooms had appeared. Those bushes are freezing now! I saw some kind of pink flowers on a tree in town blooming, too.

Daisy turns out to be a good stall keeper. She messes up the back area, but keeps the rest of her stall pretty neat, unlike Kazi who goes everywhere and then churns it all up. I am not sure why Daisy has become so neat, but I sure appreciate it! Keeping the barn clean has become a little easier since Daisy got the luxury suite. cheers

Fun night last night. Everyone sang themselves silly. We started in about 1948 at 7:30P and left Margaritaville about 11P........many were still there. Half our church was there and we all decided we were far better than the church choir.
A seriously great memory evening amongst about 120 community friends. Out of the 120 folks there about 10-12 of them could seriously sing. WAY fun.

ARK, going to the open barn at one of the big Arab farms today at 1P.....just going along for the ride as I have a friend that winds up for the open barns. I don't get very excited as mine is open every day. Shocked

Gosh, things just seem to get worse in the St Louis area on the river......
Is your area clearing CB?

Did anyone hear on the news the deaths of many many dairy cows in Amarillo due to the snow blizzards? These recent winter storms and tornadoes have really created destruction and more and more deaths of people in several states noted.

Hope we hear from ROSE soon.

Glad to read ACE is doing better TRUDY. I hate it when the dog get sick since they can't tell us what the problem is. And then, sometimes even the vet doesn't know.

Everyone have a good day. God bless.

Ark, harrys knee is doing great! he is walking without cane inside, but uses it outside.

GM we now have frozen mucky mud! we r doing fine tho....but I worry about the rivers and lakes flooding still going on for others. we arnt in any danger from that, and I'm thankful we rnt. sounds like a fun time y'all had.

I have to ask as I'm sitting here watching meet the press...what does everyone think about Trump? I think he is making sense on a lot of things but I wonder if congress and the house will let him carry out what he is saying. I k now we shouldnt talk about politics.....but I was just wondering.

Obama is trying to take our guns! ack!

What is going on in our world?

Trudy, glad max is better. my odie is having separation anxiety, when I come home he wants to jump on my lap and just cuddle...all 100 lbs of him. affraid Shocked I will start taking him for short trips maybe that will get him over it I hope. he doesn't touch anything in the house, he sits at the feed bowl and lets my lil shortstuff doxie eat first, he's a sweetheart.

I am so glad to hear Harry's knee surgery is doing well! wavy Gives me hope for Donnie's poor knees.
I just ordered a pair of supposedly waterproof muck boots for the mud. We shall see if they last any longer than the cheapos I got on sale at Tractor Supply this fall.

As for Trump: you are right, we probably shouldn't discuss him or politics.

(But since you asked what I thought, I think he is a big bully with delusions of grandeur, too rich to know what poor people want or need, an embarrassment for U.S. international relationships, a woman hater, bigoted, hateful blowhard. I think that about covers my feelings about him. hysterical )

hysterical Never ask if you really don't want to know! hysterical I basically follow the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy. It tends to keep the peace. I hate the presidential election season that lasts longer every cycle. It brings out the worst in everyone. So I will keep my future opinions to myself, promise!!

It is so cold this morning. I was kind of hoping for December's record warmth to continue, but without all the rain and havoc it created.....

The herd awaits.

We got some lake effect snow last night, about 2 inches worth. Those north of here probably have more. This morning, it can't decide whether to snow or let the sun shine. Other than the fact that the lake isn't frozen, it looks like winter now.

Ark, no I think we r all ok talking about anything without getting po'ed about it. you can voice ur opinion anytime in my book. any of us can. that's why we r here on this site!

I think the politicians are mostly alike, some of what each says I like and some ideas I'm like grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, oh he!! no.

Bought a new lamp shade on sale...............50% off, Hobby Lobby. Rex loves going out in the car so he had a great day so far.

Day is now about gone......very cloudy and gray, some wind. Chicken soup for dinner and rolls.............MMMMMMMM. Comfort foods for rainy day.

Ooooh, y'don't want to get me going on today's politics! ARK is right: we should steer clear of that. But how can I resist the wicked impulse to say that, on that person-who-should-be nameless, I agree with her? And, given all the monstrous challenges today's world faces, also think that it's utter insanity for this wealthy nation to be spending such a grossly absurd amount of time and energy on its presidential elections.

Whew.

I did vent some of my spleen (I've got a lot!!) this week in a letter to the New Yorker. Picture me sitting silently by my phone all day awaiting their call. HA!

CB That's great news about Harry's knee. You were a long time preparing for that, and it's wonderful that it's now behind you and successful. Now, how about your own health?? And it's good to hear that Mike is better. And I, too, would love to learn more about what happened to Rose, and to hear that she's progressing well, too.

Some sad news here. Sunday afternoon, I was bustling about, baking a salmon loaf and getting ready to take it to my book club when a dear friend here appeared at my front door dressed in a long coat over her nightgown (she'd been home, sick, battling what she thought was the flu) and frantically asking for my help in getting her dog to the vet. He'd been hit by a car in front of her house, which is six miles away to the west, and the nearest vet -- emergency then, because it was a Sunday -- was 40 miles to the east. Sadly, in the time it took me to shut the oven off, make a phone call, grab my coat and keys and get outside, he died. So there we stood in my driveway close by the road, she sobbing uncontrollably, and I desperately feeling the dog, over and over and over again, for some sign of life, any sign, that would contradict the grim reality. Eventually, I decided she shouldn't be going back home alone with the dog, especially since she was sick, so I got in her driver's seat and we started back to her house. And we got half-way to her house when she said, "Virginia, how are you going to get home?" Duh. She decided then that she'd be OK alone for a time, and I went to see her later, as did some other dear friends, but we are all taking it hard -- I more than I've done over my own animals recently. I think that's because Bode, the dog, a Golden Retriever, was only a year old, and because he was exceptionally happy and friendly and beautiful and lively, which, I think was because my friend loved him more than I've ever seen a human love an animal, transparently so -- and she's a person with four grown kids and six grandchildren, all of whom are emotionally close to one another. And she, in turn, is probably the most tolerant and non-judgmental person I've ever known, which, I suppose, is why that loss seems especially cruel. Sigh...

The man who hit Bode, my friend said, seemed kind and concerned, and yesterday, she reported, he knocked at her door to inquire about Bode, and then he, too, broke down sobbing.

Double whew!

Well, here, we have snow cover everywhere, about four or five inches from the season's first snowstorm storm last week -- and this morning's temperature was 0. ZERO BRRRRRRRRR!

Awww, Beech, that is so sad. I hope she gets over her flu with no complications. Then, when she's well, maybe she can get another dog. At least she knows it was an accident and not an intentional hit. The guy must feel really awful.

The little bit of snow we got yesterday hasn't gone anywhere. It was 14 degrees overnight. The wind died down and the lake has started to freeze. If the wind comes up, it will probably disintegrate until the next windless night. Since I have a couple of ash trees I need to drop onto the ice for easier clean-up, I'm hoping it will stay and get thicker over the next couple of weeks. Then, when the trees are done, it can all go away and spring can come. Very Happy

ELLEN There is a good-news side of that story. What seemed like the flu went away really fast, she thinks it may really have been food poisoning, and she was planning to go back to work today. Work for her is at an agency that provides shelter and multiple other services to battered women -- which I think may explain, in part, why she loved Bode so much. In both work and family, she gives extraordinarily to others, and I think Bode was the one being who was all hers, and all hers all the time, asking almost nothing in return but walks and smiles and hugs. (She'd never had a dog before.) After 20-plus years, she'll be retiring in a year or two, and says she won't get another dog until then. Wants another Golden pup, too, though I tried to persuade her of the merits of some quiet, already-well-trained shelter mutt in need, like my own two. I also offered to go get her a goldfish, just so she wouldn't be coming home to a completely empty house tonight. No laugh. But she has many friends and will be fine soon.

Comforts me to tell this story here. (Bode was part of my household in a way, too, because she'd bring him here to romp with my big dog -- and, boy, did they romp!)

Reminds me that I forgot to say that I was glad that Ace, too, is better!

No ice here yet, either. I looked for it on the lake I pass as I zipped by today, and saw just the merest skim of it at the lake's shallow end -- but my guess is that that will disappear in the slight warming forecast for tomorrow -- temps up to the 30s -- tho right now the temp is only 16. I hope to see all the colorful fishing shacks once more.

Time to throw another log on the fire.

When I go out of here to go to the store (or anywhere else) I have to pass another lake. It is a little smaller than this one, and lies in a different direction so the wind affects it differently. It is completely frozen over. I'm sure it isn't thick yet, but with no open water, it will likely stay frozen.
It's just after dark here, and the wind is nearly gone for the day, so more of this lake will freeze tonight. This lake is spring fed and deep, so it always takes longer for it to freeze over.
