Welcome to the month with the end of summer.....sigh....where did it go?

Isn't that a pretty dappled grey horse in the above image? Reminds me of Areion, but it isn't her.

CB:
I hope the house nibbles work out! Your mare sounds really nice. I am not very familiar with QH or Paint lines, but I have heard of Plaudet. (Did I spell that right?) Giving up my last horse would be an awful decision. I hope you can keep her as long as you want. Tomorrow a girl is coming here to buy Zippy's cart and harness and I am very sad about that. The end of an era for me. Zippy will probably be happy about it though, Laughing . I am going to hook him up to his cart tomorrow to show the girl how the harness works and take retirement photos of Zippy. He is feeling pretty good right now, I saw him canter twice today, so I feel I am jumping the gun getting rid of the cart. He stays lame most of the time these days, but isn't right now.

ELLEN:
I should clean my oven. Rolling Eyes My last batch of sliced apples from our tree is in the dehydrator right now, I will need to scrub it good, too. Have fun tomorrow with the jet ski!

Happy September and the return of cooler temps. ClappingHands ClappingHands

We dug up more potatoes yesterday, that was the end of digging potatoes, we now have enough to last us thru the winter.

CB: That's a really good bloodline. My Jazz horse was outta that bloodline, he was a great horse with a wonderful attitude. I hate the auto correct too but do enjoy the spell check, for some reason I can't spell some of the easiest words. Must be getting old. I was a spelling bee queen in grade school. LOL

ARK: AWWWWW poor Zippy no more parades for him.

ELLEN: I need to clean my oven too before baking for fall starts. I did bake one of those Perfect Size cakes yesterday. It Just the right size for us and that way I don't eat a entire 8 x 13 cake.

Trudy, is a Perfect Size cake a brand name?  A very long time ago, there used to be microwave cakes.  They came in a box that included everything but water.  You mixed them in the little baking 'pan' that came in the box too, and then put them in the microwave for about 5 minutes or so.  They were about 6"X8" in size.  Those were great.  I guess not enough people bought them so they quit selling them.

Later:  I looked up the Perfect Size cakes.  They are made by Duncan Hines, which is my favorite brand.  I will look for them the next time I go grocery shopping.  I like to keep things like that on hand in case somebody drops in unexpectedly.
However, here is one more alternative that has been around for a while.

She is a quiet mare, Trudy, and built. I just don't know if it is going to be something I will keep doing....it's a shame for her not to have a job and for her training to be kept up. I just don't kniw, but am going to make a decision soon.
Weather is great here, can't complain. There is a 100 mile yard sale tomorrow, I think we will go to part of it. Get out of the house.
What's everyone else doing this holiday weekend?

Interesting to hear CB..............Plaudit was owned for a few years by Buck Neely, (now deceased) that ran a big operation here in Gilbert in the 40's thru about 1994. He also owned Driftwood at one time...........Plaudit was a big race quarter horse..............He had great horses right up to the end. He had his own quarter horse museum on the pool table in his house which his wife, Ruby, hated.
They were a RIOT! It was about 2 mi from here and his old operation is now a riparian park..................

I just registered Eli in the Foundation Quarter Horse Assn in addition to his AQHA registry..He's coming along well in his training. and calm................

Boy, CB, tough decision re your mare..............I think about the same choice and know at some point it has to be made. Hoping your house sells.

ARK, take a pic of Zippy in his harness.......he's
SO cute.

TRUDY, wow, potatoes for the entire winter. That's super.

ELLEN, you're set until Christmas now that your oven is clean...........Woohoo.

Hot here, for sure, but the humidity is calming down.......getting packed for Alaska is fun utilizing winter clothes..........

Need to go........just wanted to get into September. Shocked Shocked Yes, September. Can you believe it? Heavens.

God bless....................

ELLEN: Yes the cake is a Duncan Hines product. My favorite brand for baking also. Everything is in the box, even a throw away pan to bake them in. Easy Peasy and very tasty especially the Red Velvet. Here in PA they are usually 2 for $5, so I keep a couple on hand. They are large enough for 6 people if you cut the pieces a little smaller. I tired that microwave cup of cake a long time ago and didn't really care for it. I'm just not a fan of microwave cooking or baking. Just an old school farm girl.

CB: It's a tough decision girlfriend. My heart breaks for you the horse addiction never goes away, I still find myself checking the local fields where I know horses will be out grazing as I drive by. I look at our empty pasture fields and remember when they were full of the horses running around. I miss them.

GRAMARE: We are set for potatoes this winter that's for sure. I sized them yesterday and split them into groups. Lots of green beans too, they are still producing. The two crops that did really well this year.

Have a great weekend everyone.

GM, her top side goes back, bit it's like 6 generations....but she is defiantly put together like halter stuff than racing or cutting. I just wanted a shorter stockier horse to get on and off of than tank who was q6.2.SHE IS 15.1 OR 2. I HAVEN'T ACTUALLY MEASURED her, but after awhile you can just eyeball and get a good guessimate. Lol
Tanks new family are all close to six feet tall, they love him.
Well, off to the yard sales....like we need anything else to pack tongue but it's get out of the house day....I went to dentist, vet, and grocery store since we came back, time for some fun stuff.
Have a great weekend.
Thanks Trudy, I knew you would know what I'm going thru....wheewwww. hard chit to decide. Your garden will be enjoyed this winter enjoying taters and green beans...
Have a great weekend Every Foop and Foopette!

Happy Labor Day!! Very Happy

I thought that logo photo of the mule in overalls looked like a working guy. Cool

GRAYMARE
We did take pix of Zippy' s last bit of labor last Friday. I will try to get one posted. He was moving great while he pulled the cart. It made me question if I had retired him too soon. But he tends to stay slightly lame on his right front foot, so it probably wasn't too soon.

We have had a busy holiday weekend so far. Donnie mowed the upper field Saturday, the last one of the year. It is very good weather for it, the hurricane didn't reach this far inland, although it was cloudy all day on Saturday from it. Yesterday we went to a wedding next to a river and the sun blessed the happy couple! sunny It was a pretty wedding. My neighbor's daughter who used to farm sit for us got married to our newest hay helper. I miss the days when Megan farm sat for us, we never had to worry when she was in charge.

Today Donnie continues to work on the hay. He thinks it will be ready to put up on Wednesday. He is taking a vacation week this week to work on his dissertation...and the hay. Lori is coming for lessons today and we may take Areion to the local horse show this coming weekend.

I'm going to local horse auction on weds, am looking for a mini for Harper. She has her saddle already. I have a separate pen to keep the mini guarantined, not going to happen like when Chris brought the sick mini home and all got sick. Wow....that was horrendous. This one will be by itself for two weeks. I will make sure he or she has attention, but I will shower and change inbetween messing with my two. Nice thing at regular horse auction, if they are ridable, they will be ridden in the field and long parking area. See them move and see if they cough being worked. Get close and personal. Chris bought hers at the livestock auction, only could see them in the small goat pens and that was it. I guess if I sell my mare I can always teach Harper and get my dose of horsey smell, but I'm having a hard time, realllllly hard time deciding. Eeek....I need to make up my mind I know.
Pam c in florida hasn't had power since Hermine touched down there, she's doing alright, I'd be pulling my hair out by now.
Dawn got lots of rain and wind,.but is fine. Her surgery has been postponed so the docs could do more tests...she is hoping to have her back surgery in october or thereabouts.
Well, back to work.....gotz lots to do. Unfortunately.

Summer is back for a few days. High 80s and humidity. The weekend will see a change to lower temperatures. I figure I have about 2, maybe 3 more days to swim before the water gets colder than I want to be in.
My neighbor and I swam this afternoon; since she has other things she has to do the next two days, she might have had her last swim for the year. They closed on the sale of their house, so this might have been her last swim as a resident here. I really hope she'll come back next summer to swim with me sometimes. I swim by myself, but it's more fun to have somebody to hang out with.
The lake was rather quiet today, now that the unofficial summer is over. All the kids are back in school. Most vacations are over. There are already some docks that have come out for the winter. Over the next month or two, most of them will be out for this year.

Two days ago, I was driving back into my house. The last road that leads to my house is one that is very out of the way, and few people are on it who don't live here. After almost 63 years, I saw something on the road I have NEVER seen before - but was delighted. I've seen a million golf cars, quads, mopeds, scooters, skateboards, and every kind of car known to exist. So, I was shocked to see a guy riding towards me on a HORSE, probably a Paso Fino. I stopped and rolled down my window to tell him I wished I was with him. He thanked me for stopping, and we both went on our way. He was clip-clopping away, and I was staring in my rear view mirror for as long as I could see him.

Awwww Ellen...That says uh ou really miss horses, I'm not sure I want to miss mine yrt, dang it.....yes still wrestling with a decision. Last night I was petting daisy Mae and this huge arse horse fly landed on her butt, I swatted her a good one without thinking about it, and she just looked at me, never moved a muscle. I walked back to her head and she laid her muzzle on my shoulder like she was thanking me. She is a quiet mare...I don't know why I am hesitating to climb aboard....ok yes I do....takes too long to heal... tongue I'd like to have someone put 30 more days on her....but sometimes money is tight...we r still repairing and doing.flooring, all takes money.
We found a nice camper just down the road.from us at one of the resorts on lake pomme de.terre. the price is good. We thought about buying a new one, but they come with only a 1 year warranty and Harry can fix most.anything...so we thought we would get one we could pay off and not have another payment.....when the house sells....so we.called the bank, all we need is the Vin number and it's ours.....gee, they make it so easy anymore....but to preserve our sanity we may do this rather than we and the 2 dogs kill each other in the truck camper... affraid
Still muddling that around too. Shouldn't be this many decisions in our old age, not fair.....mumble grumble.....

ELLEN
The horse bug never goes away.... Your lake must be very nice right now with the summer crowd gone. Our best time of year is in the summer when most the college students are gone.

CB
Your mare sounds very sweet. Maybe you could get a trainer to come to your place a couple of times to ride her, then give you some pointers while you ride her. I do understand fear of riding a young rambunctious thing.

We are in the midst of baling our field. Donnie thought it might have 50 bales. It is more like 150 bales. The weather is perfect. We will load it into the barn and garage tomorrow.

My lesson on Ivan yesterday was really wonderful! He was in a great mood and we clicked better than usual. He is so fun sometimes. Makes up for a lot! Laughing I didn't ride Areion, but she did well for Lori. We are taking her to the little local horse show on Saturday.

That's just it, Ark, she doesn't look rambunctious at all or act it....I have just turned into a weenie. She stands to be brushed and bathed without haltering.....it's me. Maybe I can find d someone to work her a bit more....and then will come the climbing on and see how it hurts so good to know if I'm even up to short rides....golden years pfffftttt
The show sounds like fun time, enjoy. Glad Ivan gave you a nice ride.....I miss the trails, the peacefulness....

CB
What makes me feel safer on a horse is wearing my helmet, and when riding Areion, I wear a riding safety vest. After a couple cracked ribs from falling off of her, I don't care what anyone thinks about it. It may save my ribs and the helmet might save my skull.

I have a friend who won't wear a helmet because she wants to look cool on her horse. She has come off her horse 5 times since I have known her.

The other thing that makes me feel safer is to practice that one rein stop. It is pretty much automatic for me while on Ivan, who has given me lots of reasons to use it. I need to practice it more on Areion.

Riding is a dangerous activity and you have every reason to have fears about it. It is hard working thru the fears. I find that if I don't ride for awhile, I am more fearful about falling off than if I ride regularly. So I try to ride at least once a week on Ivan to keep us both feeling better about it.

I hope you can work your way thru it. hug

I have worn a helmet since 1995, when I was riding a very well broke gelding and he slipped in some mud, went down so fast, I was partly under him,but cra c ked my head on a rockand had to o be stapled back together. Then I had a big gelding out of impressive flip up and over on me, put me in a wheel chair from nerve damage....but I got fearful when jessi broke her wrist and I watched in horror her going off, that did something to my courage. I've been bucked off so many times, always got back on, but that time it tore me up. I'm going to.try to keep her. I'm going to give it another try and then decide, a lot depends on the ol body..... how much r the riding vests and where did you get it.
I have a month to decide.....

CB, it's age and not athletically fit to ride. People have no idea what it takes to ride on trails. I ride totally different now than I did 5 yrs ago. We just aren't young anymore............so, a trail ride is around 2 hrs in easy mountains.......also, my horses aren't fit to do the rough mountains.

Start walking a lot, maybe 2-3 mi a day with limbering up exercises.
It will help a lot with your strength. Then just start riding some in your own pasture..........you will then know.

I ride the big rides in my memory. I was beyond blessed.............now, yes, I'm in the wimpy category, but out there.
As Baxter Black says, "I'm out there alright, out there on the edge of common sense".

Have fun and give it the old college try...............then decide.

I can see where watching your child get hurt would be worse than the fear from getting yourself hurt. I am sort of glad Donnie doesn't ride because I spent a lot of time being terrified for him when he was riding Daisy. She walked him right into our horse trailer one time (because she knew treats lived there), and he had to crawl off of her inside the trailer. Daisy is very sweet, but somewhat klutzy and was a dingbat in her younger days. He never got hurt, thank goodness. Now his knees keep him off of Daisy.

I have heard you can get used safety vests on eBay inexpensively, but I didn't hear that until after I bought mine from SmartPax. I do fit the "large child" size vest, luckily. It was $50 cheaper than the small adult size Tipperary vest, but essentially identical. Mine cost $129. I kind of wish I had saved my pennies and got the Hit Air vest, which is about $350, but is lighter weight and not as hot as the foam filled ones like mine. It is like a water safety vest and blows up using CO2 when you go flying off the horse. Lots of endurance and eventer riders use them.

GRAYMARE
I agree about the lack of fitness, and loss of some balance, being a big part of the fear issue. Also, trail riding exposes us to many more spookable things than riding in a ring, and lots to trip over, fall into, or land on. I know several folks who never get out of the ring, so never understood why trail riders sometimes say they are "just" trail riders. It takes some courage to get out of the ring for the rider and the horse.

One of my biggest fears is riding alone out there in the big, bad world. I am not as much afraid of falling off and getting hurt as I am of falling off and losing my horse. Now that scares me. Luckily, those times Ivan has managed to unseat me on a trail ride, I have been with someone and he didn't run off, probably because of the other horses we were with. He usually stands there looking at me and wondering how I got in front of him. Rolling Eyes

Just got home from staying with the little girls. When Travis got home, he showed me a picture that he had just taken two doors over from me. For pete sakes, it was an iguana! They are NOT native to this area. We are guessing that it was either turned loose or escaped from somebody. It looked to be about 12 or 13 inches long.
Not being a lizard expert, my guess is that it will not survive our winter.

ELLEN
The iguana will not survive the winter. My stepmother had one in St. Pete, FL that had to have a heat source in their winter. I hope someone rescues it.

GRAYMARE
I have been trying to recover from putting up 150 bales of hay yesterday. I have been a slug....while simultaneously cleaning the barn twice and working on gathering a dump run from our garage, then making the dump run.

CB
I suspect the pony was free and the training cost $1600. Very Happy

Tomorrow Donnie has to trim some horsey feet and I have to give Areion a good bath for her horse show on Saturday. Kazi got her bath Tuesday before going for her hoof trim. She looked really nice....for a little while... Laughing

I'm guessing the odds of finding the thing again are rather slim. It's going to be colder at night from here on out, so it doesn't stand much of a chance.
I don't know what the cats would do with it if they found it. It's quite a bit bigger than most of their prey, so they might tiptoe away and pretend they didn't see it.

Ark, do you have enough hay from your own field to make it through the winter?
