RICK:
Happy Birthday!
Congrats on no Cigs for a year!!

May you and Carol have at least 40 more years of wedded bliss!!!

SILVERDANCER:
Ivan and take two steps forward and then one step back on any given week Laughing . He is a puzzle. He has come an incredibly long way. You probably weren't around when I got him (lucky you haven't had to listen to me go on about him for the past four years like some of these folks hysterical ) When he arrived on my doorstep, he was one month past being a three year old stallion who had never been handled and was wild as a hare. He was gelded a month before he came here, I couldn't deal with that, we were in the midst of getting Kazi and Daisy pregnant with Areion and didn't need his help. He lived in our arena for most of his first year here and went from being scared of life, the universe and everything, to mostly being leery of those things. He has finally gotten past most of his fears and has never offered to be mean or do anything to get rid of that heavy lump on his back.....that would be me. Very Happy I did all his ground training and early saddle training and when he caught up with my abilities, we started taking riding lessons together. I like him. He has a war with his nerves, but you can tell he really wants to please most of the time. If he had a really good rider, he would be much further advanced, I am sure.

Orienteering sounds like a blast! I would love to try it. So how hot is Ireland?

SUNNY:
Still getting rain? Those fires must be out now. We didn't get anything off of Beryl, it stayed closer to the coast. Today is the first day of hurricane season....Happy Hurricanes! Rolling Eyes

TRUDY:
What will you do with yourself for the next three days? Laughing Not cooking sounds great! I would eat KFC from a bucket and not wash a dish!

CB:
Caught that pair of snakes yet? I suspect they heard about your shovel and left town.

GRAYMARE:
Do you have internet in the mountains? How's it going up there?

APPY:
How were your horses doing? Did you get your car fixed? We just discovered our inspection sticker expired today and I am without wheels until it gets done.

ELLEN:
The lake must be busy with all the heat. We are waiting on a line of thunderstorms coming this afternoon, then it will cool off for us for a few days. I canceled my ride today with Lori because of these storms, they look pretty fierce.

EILEEN:
Find any socks? Laughing Whenever I put up all the winter clothes, we get a cold front and I have to dig them out again. How are your horses doing?

CAROL:
Did it get cooler around you? It's supposed to be around 70 here tomorrow. I am taking Ivan back to Foster Falls on the New River Trail tomorrow for a trail ride with most of the same riders and horses we rode with when he was such a basket case a few weeks ago. Hopefully his nerves will be better tomorrow and I won't have to fight to keep him slowed down for 12 miles. The vet said to take wonderful hay and goodies so Ivan thinks away trips are a horsey smorgasbord. I have some alfalfa hay to give him. He should love that. Drool

Ark, thankfully it has warmed up to "no socks required" temps, I did find slippers though to make it easier on the feet.
I also like your new picture of the month...I know a lot of people like that...You just gotta wonder what it is that a teeny weeny little itty bitty spider has to scare the bejeebers out of a being that is 1000 times larger than they are...the there is the mouse phobia...what is that all about...100 times bigger, heavier and supposed to be so much smarter than they are and yet, 150 lbs of person jumps up on a chair...like a mouse can't climb up the legs of a chair...duh...lol
Ellen thanks for the website, been riding at the Harrison Crawford many years ago might be time to re explore that area. I also see that Deam Lake was also damaged and is closed till further notice.
Yes it is June...where did the spring go??? I am not ready for summer yet.

EILEEN:
You are talking about two of my favorite phobias hysterical . Strangely, I will try to save a spider or a mouse in a difficult situation, but if it even appears to be going to run up my leg, it's every spider or mouse for itself. A few years ago I was cleaning out my poultry house, lifted up a piece of plywood lying on the floor and at least 30 mice ran out from under it, many straight for me. affraid I levitated out of there. Then my brave chickens had a rodent rodeo and caught up and ate a lot of those mice right in front of me. I wuv my chickies.... I love you

RICK:
So how are you celebrating Pop-Pop's birthday? Very Happy

We took Kazi to Va Tech yesterday for her pedicure. She was so sweet, stood like a statue even while the farrier was roasting her hooves with a hot horseshoe with smoke bellowing everywhere. She had to stand near a huge white gelding, a 28 year old Anglo/Arab/Warmblood cross who is a retired dressage horse that was imported from Brazil years ago. Kazi liked him. Very Happy That horse was at at least 17 hands tall, made Kazi look like a pony. They made a cute couple.

Ark, today's high was 53, so we certainly weren't suffering with the heat today. We also got some very much needed rain. We need more, but some is better than nothing. The high tomorrow will be about 70, so a little better.

Rick, big congratulations on kicking Dame Nicotine out of your life! That's never easy, but I'm sooo happy you have.

Have been nursing / fighting a sore throat for past 2 - 3 days, so I really haven't done a whole lot of anything. We are to go over to Kid Cameron's house tomorrow evening for a meal...hope we both feel up to it. Carol has been kinda puny herself and "barking" a bit.

Carol did fix me her special meatloaf for supper tonight...my request. She has been diligently working on her scrapbook which means I need to get busy and "report" here.

I won't say I have QUIT...just haven't HAD one in a year.

Love to all....RICK

Neither one of us feels good...dratted cold, etc...with near constant barking. I suspect we picked up a germ on our flight home. We have cancelled the Kid Cameron event for this evening.

I did get the yard mowed, though. Rest of my day will be like ARK's infamous "slugs"

Love to all....Just don't get to close!!

KC only has 4 days let for school this year. I can only imagine that GiGi and Pop Pop will "see" him a lot more this summer. Hard to believe he is going into second grade next year.

Jillian called earlier this afternoon to tell us a "Cam-Man" story. Jacob was outside mowing their yard...she was doing something in her sewing room... Cam was playing quietly in his room. After a bit of time, he went out into the living room and crawled up into a recliner with a book in his hand (NOT a game, etc.) and started reading. After a bit of that, Jillian heard him chuckle some...and eventually break out in BIG laugh. She inquired about that and he said it was something FUNNY that he was READING. We all think that is great that a kid that age would (1) have gumption enough to read a book on his own, and (2) be able to see and comprehend enough to understand the HUMOR he was reading. He has also really started working hard on self discipline/conduct in school.

Sorry for bragging...just had to tell on my buddy boy.

Rick...gonna have left over meatloaf for supper tonight!!

The Wonders of Wales …. 8 - 25 May, 2012

The WELSH language reminds me of the TV game show WHEEL OF FORTUNE. Without going into detail, I believe you’ll understand why I often times wanted to “buy a vowel.”

As soon as she returns from a trip, Carol starts the thinking process about “Where is the next trip?” In 1999, she and Jillian (our youngest daughter who turned 21 years old at the time) had traveled across a small part of Wales on a quick journey from Ireland to England. Carol had described Wales to me as this “little country with BIG scenery.” It nestles on the western shoulder of England and has mountains, rolling hills, and a long sea coast. She chose 4 B&B’s in a variety of locations … an English Horse Farm, a Welsh sheep/dairy farm, a coastal inlet, and a small village in an English Forest. Reservations were completed in early January. As far as attractions go, she had assistance from one of her co-workers who is a native of Wales.

I enjoy the travel, but I’m not the best of travelers on long time/distance flights due to being vertically enhanced. (I’m kinda/sorta tall with the height mostly due to long legs) Because of this...among a myriad of other reasons… we got to the airport e-x-t-r-a early and were able to get the bulkhead seating on the aircraft that provided several much needed extra inches of leg room for the long flight. The short flight from Greensboro, NC to Philadelphia, PA was tolerable on the small “puddle jumper”. I might add here that Carol did an outstanding job with packing for the two of us in one bag plus carry-ons….36 lbs in the big bag!! We had a change of clothes, toiletries, and our computer(s) in the carry-ons. Charlotte...and her service dog, Kima...drove us to the airport in my truck. Jillian, Jacob, and Kid Cameron were on schedule to meet us on our return. YES….Carol REMEMBERED our passports this time!!

After flying through the night from Philadelphia, we arrived early morning to a bright day in Manchester, England. After a phone call and a 15 minute wait. We were picked up by the car rental company (THRIFTY) and driven to their office to sign paperwork, etc. and pick up our “mid-sized” Ford Focus. Since this was my 5th (??) time driving in the UK, it did not take very long for me to acclimate driving on the “left” side of the road in a “right hand” drive car. Fortunately, the first 30 miles or so was on a “M” Route. “M” roads are about the same as our Interstate Highways. Or to paraphrase a terminology from my truck driving days...its a “Big Road”.

If we had driven straight to our first “home for 3 nights”, we would have been way too early for checkin. So, we decided to see and do what we could in the city of Chester, England. This city has quite a bit of history to it. Read some of it here: http://www.localhistories.org/chester.html and play around with some of the pictures here: http://www.chester360.co.uk/panoramic-chester.htm Getting into and out of Chester was an adventure unto itself for a novice UK driver. I’m OK and feel rather comfortable while driving in the country, but this ‘ol farm boy from NC just DON’T DO cities very well, and especially so since I wasn’t driving my big ole 18 wheeler and could fairly well get the right of way when I needed it. Going INTO town…got lost 3 times. Going OUT OF town...lost 2 times. While there were a few intersections that had street signs on posts, the vast majority of the time, you would find signs attached to the side of the building. It was a guessing game for sure. I might also explain that I do 95% of the driving while Carol does 110% of the NAGrivating. Seriously, she does a MUCH BETTER job with reading the UK road maps than I do. (yeah...I’m a retired truck driver with 1 ½ MILLION miles of Rand McNally Truckers Road Atlas and a cell phone for getting around the country)

We got the car parked in a “Pay & Display” lot... found the Tourist Info. Center … started walking, walking, and walking and looking at the sights in this very old city. The first thing we found was the area with the old post and beam buildings (the black & white ones) The Eastgate Clock is inline with the old Roman Walls that remain in use today. It straddles a pedestrian avenue and is a great meeting place since it is so visible from the main city streets. It is hard to believe that the local history of this thriving city dates back 2000 years. I was told one time by a tour guide in France, “You Americans really don’t have any (much) history compared to Europe.” I wish now that I had paid just a wee bit more attention to some history lessons when I was in school.

We will return tomorrow for a bit more of Chester, but we both are tired and hungry and so we find our way “home” to Newton Hall...about 10 - 12 miles out of Chester. Here is where we called “home” for our first three nights of this odyssey: http://www.newtonhallfarm.co.uk/

I’ll try to do more tomorrow with each day covering 1 or 2 days.

Rick

ELLEN:
Page numbers will show up on the second page. Warmer yet? It got to 64 here yesterday, but was really pretty out.

RICK:
I enjoyed your first days in Wales! Please continue the journey. I can't wait to see if you went to any of the same places we did.
Hope you are Carol are feeling better today. I bet you did catch a bug on the plane. Donnie and I got stuck on a fairly small jetliner way back when for 12 hours while they 'fixed' a problem. The air inside was terrible and I am surprised we didn't die of something or other. A month later, a plane the same size from the same airline crashed carrying a couple of hundred military folks. We always wondered if it was the same plane.

We took Ivan for another trail ride at Foster Falls on the New
River Trail yesterday with three horses he has been with several times. Once again he was hyperactive and hard to control. Lori, my instructor, was there and was a great help with exercises and such to help with him, but I am beginning to think I can't do a trail ride with more than one other horse. He just can't handle the extra pressure yet. Our best rides have been with just one other horse. So, once again, we were the bad example in the crowd....sigh.... I
think we will be doing a lot more arena work on controlling his
different body parts and regaining the 'thinking side' of his brain for the foreseeable future. He's just not ready for prime time, yet.

We did an incredible amount of work on moving his shoulders as we turned a circle, and sidepassing down the trail. After 6 miles of this, I was worn out and knew of a place Donnie could bring the trailer, so had him meet us there. Ivan acted best when he was a hundred yards or so down the trail in front of the other horses. He didn't mind being out in front at all and walked on a fairly loose rein at that time. I wonder if riding him alone is the best idea for him? I don't care much for it myself, but he may like it.

He wasn't afraid of bikes, walkers, or passing other horses we met along the trail. He just can't stop jigging and pulling and wanting to race ahead of the horses he is with. It's tiring to ride a fire breathing dragon.

I am catching up on the posts slowly. I have no idea where my times goes.

Today it has not rained yet, first day in a while that it has been dry from above.
Rick ...thoroughly enjoyed reading of your adventures in Wales. I can't wait to read the next "book" lol I can't remember what year I was over there, by myself, renting a car and driving on the left side of the road. or at least was supposed to be on left side...found myself wandering over to the right many times...thank goodness for the native UK drivers who were aware that there was a foreigner at the wheel of that crazy car zig zaging etc. lol but I did survive. It would have been nice to have a navigator for the seriously "lost" situations.
Ark..some horses just have their druthers, many can't handle going out on their own, lucky me has never had one like that, don't know what I would do if I did...then there are those that can't stand the crowds, of those I have had a few. I guess we gotta figure them out and try and comply with what they can't handle and what they can handle. I do know what it is like trying to handle a "wired for sound" horse on a long ride, no one really enjoys the time on the trail. Good luck with the training, and hope that you two can come to an agreement on what is acceptable on the trails.

I found this elsewhere and thought it was worth a chuckle or two here:

These are actual comments made by South Carolina Troopers
that were taken off their car videos:

1. "You know, stop lights don't come any redder than
the one you just went through."

2. "Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll
stretch after you wear them a while."

3. "If you take your hands off the car, I'll make your birth
certificate a worthless document." (My Favorite)

4. "If you run, you'll only go to jail tired."

5. "Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because
that's the speed of the bullet that'll be chasing you." (LOVE IT)

6. "You don't know how fast you were going? I guess that
means I can write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?"

7. "Yes, sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I'm the shift supervisor?"

8. "Warning! You want a warning? O.K, I'm warning you not to
do that again or I'll give you another ticket."

9. "The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?"

10. "Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you go to ride on rides, eat cotton candy and corn dogs and step in monkey poop."

11. "Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven."

12. "In God we trust; all others we run through NCIC." ( National Crime Information Center )

13. "Just how big were those 'two beers' you say you had?"

14. "No sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we're allowed to write as many tickets as we can."

15. "I'm glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend of yours. So you know someone who can post your bail."

AND THE WINNER IS....

16. "You didn't think we give pretty women tickets?
You're right, we don't. Sign here."

It's cold and raining here again this morning 58 degrees...more like April than June. Oh well, the garden is growing like the weeds, unfortunately the weeds are also growing like weeds and starting to take over the garden. It's a viscous cycle.

George is home from the commanders conference and I'm off to work today. My mini vacation is over. boo hoo Those days just flew by, back to the world of the retired husband who is stuck in the house because it's raining....help meeeeeeeeeee....

ARK: Your body will be in great shape by the time summer is over with. Riding a fire breathing dragon will keep you in good physical condition. It can be so difficult trying to figure out how our horses think. Like people, some horses like to be the leaders of the group, they sure make trail riding difficult for us riders. Hang in there, you will get him figured out.

Have a great day everyone.

Love & prayers to all...

that seems to happen to me every time they switch to a new month I have to log in again then it is fine, well the heat is on and so is the humidity I have been leaving the windows open at night and up until the heat gets to much to bear, but now with the rain we had last week the humidity is up so I have to keep the windows closed and the air on but we keep it set at 82 to keep the electric bill down we have ceiling fans going to keep the air moving in here so it is not quite so bad, I hope that all are having a great day and Rick waiting to hear more reports on your trip it sounds so far like you had a wounderful time

English bacon is mostly lean meat and is nearly twice as thick as our American style bacon. It is NOT fried crispy and is rather more like thin sliced ham. I have an overwhelming penchant for making a sandwich out of any meat I’m eating. As an aside, I’ve even been known to make a sandwich out of filet mignon steak. The English bacon is just “perfect” for making into a breakfast type sandwich.

Since our computer group here is devoted to horses and we are staying at a “horse farm”, I perhaps need to talk a bit about that. This was an active dairy farm up until recent years. It is now a farm where they raise replacement heifers for dairy farmers in the area and they also do a bit of horse boarding as well as own a few head of horses of their own. We looked out our bedroom window down over one of the grazing paddocks and could see their three horses and a couple of the boarders...all with their heads down continually/contentedly grazing. I did not get into any philosophical discussions of their riding discipline vs. my preferred “western”, etc. I will say this though…”them’s TALL critters” compared to my AQHA mare.

Looking off into the distance, we could see one of the “attractions” we would be visiting during our stay at Newton Hall. That would be the first of several old castle ruins we would be seeing before returning home to America. The castle is BEESTON Castle. Here you’ll find some history and maybe get an idea of the views out across the countryside as seen from the ruins: www.britishcastle.co.uk/index.php?pageId=BeestonCastle_History and you might also get some insight from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeston_Castle The setting tops out at 500 feet from the plain (relatively flat land) below.

After hearing our tale(s) of woe about getting lost, etc. in our driving around, Anne (our sweetheart of a hostess) told us about a “park and ride” location that was just a couple miles from home. There, we could pay a small, nominal fee and park the car and then catch a bus for a 20 minute ride back into downtown Chester. This was an answer to a prayer for us. We were dropped off the bus within easy walking distance of the main attractions to see in Chester and told that the bus would pick us up at the same location.

A “town” in England / Wales is designated as a “city” if there is a “cathedral” located there. There is a cathedral in Chester that we wanted to see, but both of us were dismayed to learn that there was an “admission charge” just to get inside. Our personal feelings are that we are more than happy to make a “donation” but to be “charged admission” to enter a facility like a cathedral was just a bit too much. We did NOT go into the cathedral. However, there is an interesting old church (site) nearby that dates to 689AD. I’ll not say much more other than we are glad we went to St. John’s Church. Here is a You Tube video I found that I think you’ll enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjf7Z4JfdPg also check out this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wjf7Z4JfdPg and this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:St_John's_Church,_Chester_-_Westfenster_2.jpg to see why we were enthralled with this old church. The gentleman at the Tourist Information office tickled us with his way of dating the church. He would say that the church “dates to ‘six’ ‘eight’ ‘nine’” instead of “six eighty nine”. We were met at the door of the church by an enthusiastic young man who volunteered to give us “the best PERSONAL tour of St. John’s Church...all for NO ADMISSION COST to you.” I had to slow him down some during his presentation so my slow hearing ‘Southern ears’ could keep up with what all he was saying about the stained glass windows, pillars, interior grave stones, and church history. We gladly left a donation before continuing our walk around the town on the Roman Walls. The weather was cloudy and a bit “moist” at times, but we trudged on and arrived back at the bus stop with plenty of time to spare. My feet were getting pretty darn tired and I rested on a bench while Carol did just a little bit of “retail therapy”.

On our way back home to Newton Hall, we kinda/sorta found ourselves at the local Ice Cream Farm: http://www.cheshirefarmicecream.co.uk/how-to-find-us.html and had three scoops each of some of the best ice cream you’ll ever eat. I had a mixture of fruit flavors...not sure what Carol had, but I know mine was “bettern’ hers”. Dinner was in the company of a couple of ladies from Australia and New Zealand in one of the pubs/restaurant in a nearby village. Play with the pointer finger (of your computer mouse) over the little pictures to see the inside of the dining room and the spectacular exterior views: http://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/the-pheasant-inn.en.html All four of us had the Steak & Ale Pie with new potatoes and English peas. I rather enjoyed my pint of beverage also.

I’ll pick up again later tonight or tomorrow with Day 3.

Love to all….Rick & Carol

oh boy, here we go again, we have fires burning out of control due to our 70 mph winds we are having....one fire on Hwy 20 near Mt. Home, and one fire near King Hill near I 84 and they have burned the main power line and we have no power. Luckily I had a charge on my puter and the kids have their skanners so they will let me know where the fires are and if they are getting close...this is some miserable stuff and the temps have dropped 20 degrees already in an hour.

Do some of your best "HUMMINS" y'all....this wind they can't even fight it, no drops from BLM and no ground crews as its too dangerous...its just gonna burn until this wind goes away. Kid Jaemi said she thought they lost a doctors house on the hiway...big beautiful house he has too...and it had jumped hot creek road..which runs east to Oregon Trail which I live on....ya know I can't wait to get moved, donchas?

Rick, I am so envious, thanks for sharing your trip and memories...it sounds so great! a trip of a lifetime!
